Al Hamra Cinema, Wednesday January 23 (6pm)

"Kilauea is the most active volcano on Hawaii and Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of fire. This film by American director JoAnn Gillerman has been shot over three decades, as the volcano has erupted time and again. At its heart, though, this is a human story — as awe-inspiring as Kilauea is, its near constant belching of lava has claimed many people’s homes. It's a beautiful film that explores our relationship with nature, told largely through the eyes of a Hawaiian woman at an evacuation centre. No one knows what Kilauea will do next."   --- Rupert Hawksley

* Eruption Update June 2019: The 2018 eruption on Kīlauea volcano's East Rift Zone (Hawaii) that began on May 3, 2018, may be related to the larger eruption of Kīlauea that began on January 3, 1983,
though some volcanologists and USGS scientists have discussed whether to classify it a new eruption. By early July 2018, fissure 8 and the LERZ eruption quieted.
June 2019 - The fissure area and Fissure 8 are mostly quiet, a slight sulfur smell but no active lava flows inside Fissure 8. A significant vent (cone) remains in the areas where Leilani Estates and private land were.
Kilauea Volcano is an active volcano that is currenlty at NORMAL/GREEN alert level as of June 2019.
